A Walk in the Park: Supporting Independence this World Parkinson’s Day

A Walk in the Park: Supporting Independence this World Parkinson’s Day

Saturday, 11th April 2026, marks World Parkinson’s Day, a time to raise awareness and support the 18,000 people living with Parkinson’s across Ireland. This year, the focus is on "A Walk in the Park"—encouraging everyone to stay moving and stay connected.

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have to manage Parkinson’s symptoms. Whether it’s a local awareness walk or a stroll in your garden, staying active helps maintain balance, strength, and mood. However, we know that for many, the fear of falling can make these simple activities feel daunting.

That is why having the right support is so important. If you or a loved one find that a standard walker feels "too light" or difficult to control, the U-Step 2 Press-Down Model might be the answer. It is designed to feel as steady as holding onto someone’s arm.

    Tips for World Parkinson’s Day:

    1. Join a Walk: Check out the "Walk in the Park" events happening in 21 locations across Ireland—including Merrion Square and Phoenix Park—this Saturday at 11 am.

    2. Check Your Equipment: Ensure your walking aids are adjusted to the correct height to encourage an upright posture.

    3. Simplify Your Safety: If hand-squeezing brakes are a struggle, consider "press-down" systems that stop the walker automatically when you let go.

Let’s use this day to celebrate resilience and take a step forward together toward a more active, independent life.
