A riser recliner is a motorised armchair with a built-in lift mechanism that gently tilts the seat forward to help you rise to a standing position safely. It also reclines fully for rest and comfort. They are sometimes called rise and recline chairs, electric recliner chairs, or lift chairs. Unlike a standard electric recliner, the riser function is specifically designed to reduce strain on knees, hips, and joints when standing up.
No. A standard electric recliner adjusts the backrest and footrest for comfort but does not lift you to a standing position. A riser recliner has an additional motor and mechanism that tilts the entire seat forward and upward, helping you stand without putting stress on your joints.
A single-motor riser recliner moves the backrest and footrest together in one synchronized motion - simple and easy to use. A dual-motor riser recliner allows you to operate the backrest and footrest independently. This is ideal if you want to sit upright with your feet elevated, need a precise recline angle for medical comfort, or spend long periods in the chair. Most people with specific postural needs benefit from dual motor.
The two key measurements are seat height and seat width. When seated, your feet should rest flat on the floor and your knees should be at roughly a 90-degree angle. Seat width should allow about two fingers' width of space on either side of your hips. If you are between sizes, or have a larger frame, we stock bariatric and extra-wide models such as the Alaska Extra Large. Call our team on 0818 989 353 if you are unsure.
Most of our riser recliners include an emergency battery backup system. In the event of a power cut, the battery allows the chair to complete at least one full cycle - returning to a neutral seated or standing position so you are never stuck. Check individual product listings to confirm whether your chosen model includes this feature.

Yes. The HSE Mobility Aids Grant Scheme provides funding for equipment that aids mobility in the home, and riser recliner chairs may qualify depending on your circumstances. You will typically need a letter from your GP or an assessment from an Occupational Therapist (OT) to support your application. Grant amounts and eligibility criteria are set by the HSE and can change - contact your local HSE office or a healthcare professional for current details.
Yes. If the chair is being purchased for a person with a physical disability or chronic illness, you can reclaim the 23% VAT under Irish Revenue's VAT relief scheme for aids and appliances. You will need to complete the VAT 61A Form from Revenue. BetterLiving.ie provides the itemised invoice you need to support your claim. See our VAT Relief page for full details.
In addition to the HSE Mobility Aids Grant, it is worth checking with your local authority about the Housing Adaptation Grant, which can sometimes cover furniture and equipment that supports independent living at home. Your GP or OT can advise on what you are likely to qualify for.
