    Riser Recliner Frequently Asked Questions

Find expert advice on choosing, funding, and maintaining your riser recliner chair in Ireland.

What is the difference between a single-motor and dual-motor riser recliner?

A single-motor chair moves the backrest and footrest together in one synchronized motion. A dual-motor chair allows you to operate the backrest and footrest independently. This is ideal if you want to sit upright while having your feet elevated, or if you need to adjust the back angle precisely for medical comfort.

Can I get a grant for a riser recliner in Ireland?

Yes. Many users qualify for the HSE Mobility Aids Grant, which can provide up to €8,000 (as of 2026) for essential furniture that aids mobility. You will typically need a letter from your GP or an assessment by an Occupational Therapist (OT) to support your application.

Is a riser recliner the same as a standard electric recliner?

No. While both recline, a riser recliner has a specialized "lift and tilt" mechanism. This gently raises the entire base of the chair to help you transition to a standing position safely without straining your knees or hips.

Can I reclaim VAT on my riser recliner?

Yes. If the chair is being purchased for a person with a physical disability, you can reclaim the 23% VAT. You must complete the VAT 61A Form from the Revenue Commissioners. We provide the itemized invoice required for your claim.

How do I choose the right size chair?

Size is vital for both comfort and safety. You should be able to sit with your feet flat on the floor when the chair is in its standard position, and the seat width should allow for about two fingers' width of space on either side of your hips.

What happens if there is a power cut?

Most of our riser recliners come equipped with an emergency battery backup system. This ensures that if the power goes out, the chair can be returned to a seated or standing position at least once so you are not stuck in a reclined state.
