Travelling with a Mobility Scooter: Tips for Irish Holidays in 2026

Travelling with a Mobility Scooter: Tips for Irish Holidays in 2026

A mobility scooter should never mean giving up on a holiday. With the right model and a little planning, there is no reason your summer break has to look any different from everyone else's. Coastal walks, city breaks, visits to family, all of it is possible. In this guide, we share everything you need to know about travelling with a mobility scooter in 2026, from choosing the right model to packing it for the plane.

Step One: Choose the Right Scooter for Travel

Not all mobility scooters are equally suited to travel. The key factors to consider are how the scooter disassembles, the weight of its individual parts, and the battery type. Here is how our most popular travel-friendly models compare:

Jaunt Mobility Scooter - From €799

The Jaunt is a straightforward, practical travel option. It separates into five individual sections, making it manageable to load and unload from a car boot. It is not the lightest scooter on the market, but it is one of the most affordable and the disassembly process is quick once you are used to it. A solid choice for those taking regular car trips within Ireland.

    AstroLite Mobility Scooter - €1,749

If travel is a priority, the AstroLite is our top recommendation. When disassembled, its heaviest individual component weighs under 10 kg, a meaningful difference when you are loading a car boot or navigating a ferry terminal. An airline-friendly lithium-ion battery is available, and the all-round suspension means the ride quality at your destination is excellent. For regular travellers, the extra investment pays for itself quickly.

    InstaFold Scooter - €1,899

The InstaFold takes a different approach to portability. Rather than disassembling into sections, it folds down with a single press of a button, compact, quick, and easy to load. This makes it particularly convenient for those who want to minimise the loading process at both ends of a journey. Its lithium-ion battery also makes it suitable for airline travel, subject to the airline's own rules.

    Manual Fold Plus - €1,499

A mid-range option worth considering is the Manual Fold Plus. At 19.8 kg and with an airline-friendly lithium-ion battery, it folds to a compact size and offers a range of up to 9.3 miles. It sits between the Jaunt and the AstroLite in terms of weight and price, making it a practical option for those who want a foldable travel scooter without stretching to the AstroLite.

    Flying with a Mobility Scooter

Many of our customers are surprised to learn that it is possible to fly with a mobility scooter, but it does require some preparation. Here is what you need to know:

    • Battery type matters most. Airlines restrict certain battery types on aircraft. Lithium-ion batteries within permitted watt-hour limits are generally accepted on most airlines, while larger or lead-acid batteries are typically not permitted. All of the scooters listed above with airline-friendly batteries use lithium-ion within standard limits, but always confirm with your specific airline before travel.
    • Contact your airline in advance. Every airline has its own rules regarding mobility equipment. Contact them directly before booking to confirm what is permitted, what documentation they may require, and how the scooter should be presented at check-in.
    • Arrive early. Allow extra time at the airport. Mobility equipment is handled differently from standard luggage and check-in staff may need time to process it correctly.
    • Carry the battery specifications. Keep a printed copy of the battery's watt-hour rating with you at the airport. This resolves most queries quickly and avoids delays.

    Aer Lingus

For information on informing Aer Lingus about your equipment and their specific requirements, visit their Disability Assistance page here: Aer Lingus Special Assistance

    Ryanair

Fitting Your Scooter in the Car

For most Irish holiday trips, the car is the main mode of transport, and making sure the scooter fits comfortably is essential. Here is how to approach it:

    • Measure before you buy. Ask us for the disassembled dimensions of any scooter you are considering. The heaviest and largest section is typically the main body — this is the piece that needs to fit in your boot. We can provide these measurements during a home demonstration.
    • Consider a test load. Our free in-home demonstration is the perfect opportunity to check that the scooter actually fits in your specific car. We bring it to your door and you can try loading it yourself before making any decision.

    Accessible Destinations in Ireland

Ireland has made significant improvements to accessibility in recent years, and many popular destinations are now well-suited to mobility scooter users. When planning your trip, look for:

    • Flat, smooth promenades - Dun Laoghaire, Bray, and Salthill are excellent examples.
    • National parks with accessible trails - Killarney National Park has a number of well-maintained flat routes.
    • Town centres with good footpaths - most larger Irish towns now have dropped kerbs and smooth pedestrianised areas.
    • Visitor attractions with accessibility statements -  always check the attraction's website in advance for specific mobility information.
    • Ireland's Greenways - most of Ireland Greenway's are accessible for mobility scooters and they offer great access to Ireland's countryside.

    Charging While Away

All of the scooters we recommend for travel use standard Irish and European plug sockets for charging. If you are travelling within Ireland, charging is straightforward, most hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering properties will accommodate a standard charger plugged into a wall socket overnight.

If you are travelling abroad, you will need a travel adaptor for your destination. The chargers supplied with our scooters are generally compatible with 110–240V power supplies, meaning they work across Europe and most international destinations, but do check the charger label to confirm before you travel.

    Travel Insurance and Mobility Aids

Before travelling, check your travel insurance policy carefully. Key points to confirm:

    • Is your mobility scooter covered for loss or damage during transit?
    • Does the policy include breakdown cover or emergency replacement at your destination?
    • Is the scooter listed on the policy, or does it need to be added as a named item?

Standard travel insurance policies vary widely in how they handle mobility equipment. It is worth calling your insurer directly to confirm coverage rather than assuming it is included.

Book a Demonstration Before You Travel
